(tutorial) pillowcase nightgowns take 2

I don't know whether you remember one of my very first posts on this blog, but I made Emily a bunch of pillowcase nightgowns.
Well, Emily is now growing out of those cute nightgowns, so I knew it was time to make some more.

Recently, I came across this picture on Pinterest:
Source via Pinterest

Adorable, right?
She took a vintage dress and added lace to make a cute dress for her daughter.
Well, like so many things on Pinterest that I see (I am addicted) it was immediate inspiration for
pillowcase nightgowns take 2

I had some pillowcases that never got used the first time around, and my mom sent me some too.
(I currently have about 10 more to make!)
I purchased some wide stretch lace from
Lace Heaven, the best and cheapest place to buy lace trim.
The beautiful stretch lace showed up a few days later and I got to work!

The best thing about these are how quick they are to make! Less than an hour a piece.
Though I loved the last version, they weren't really a quick project.

So if any little girls in your life are in need of pretty little nightgowns,
you can whip a couple of these out in an evening!

Materials Needed
2- 2 1/2" wide stretch lace
pillowcase
matching thread

I made these 22 1/2" long, for a 5-year-old of average height and weight.

My lace band was 22" long, and each of my straps were 11" long.

OK, so don't make your stitches exactly like that...

And thats it! You're done.
After you cut about a million threads.

  1. I love this! I'm in love with pillowcases and nightgowns are so expensive! Great idea with the lace. My daughter's always complaining that regular pillowcase dresses are too itchy. This would probably solve that problem.

  9. I love this! Thanks so much for the tutorial. Quick question, I have some lace but its not stretch, can I still use it for this?

  10. You could use regular lace, but you would have to open up the back and have some sort of closure, like a button or something. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to put it on.

  12. These are great! I'm thinking about trying it for myself. Of course, I'm not exactly pillowcase sized so I'll have to figure something out. ;-)

  16. I Love this! So pretty! Do you remember what the name of the lace on the puple vintage flower dress is called? There are so many options on that sight!!!

  18. I can't wait to try this. I just saw someone post on pinterest this easy way to gather- it might save you from having to unpick your basting stitches! I assume if you try it this other way, all you have to do is pull out the crochet thread after sewing the lace! It looks like it will slide right out! http://thefamilyhomestead.com/gatherfabrictutorial.htm

  19. Does your daughter find this lace to be itchy? I have three girls and would love to make some of these for them but they won't wear them if they are itchy.

    1. She wears these nightgowns all the time and has never once complained about itchiness...the lace just gets softer with many washings...

  27. I absolutely love these! I have two daughters (3 & 6) and will be making these for sure!! One question for you... I am sort of new to sewing... I have mended for years and just in the last year have made my girls lots of pj pants and a couple easy dresses. For these night gowns I do not have pillow cases but I do have lots of wonderful material I would like to use for them.... how would I go about figuring out how much material or the measurements to make the night gowns look like yours?

    Thanks for your time!

    1. Kim! Just take a pillowcase, and measure it across. Take that and double it, and that is how much to cut on the width. Then you would just fold it in half wrong sides together, and stitch it. For the length, Measure your child from armpits to however long you want the nightie to be. Then add a couple inches for hems.

  28. I love this tutorial, the nighty is great and we are using them for summer nighty's and I am using the same version for our AG doll too. It gets pretty cold up here in the winter and it doesn't help that my husband was a polar bear in a previous life so it gets mighty cold in the house. I took your idea of using a tank top as a guide and tweeked it. I took one of her long sleeved shirts and attached the pillow case as you did to the lace. If not for your tutorial I probably would have over thought this project and spent way more time than necessary trying to get it done right.
Thank you for your easy explanations :)

  30. Thanks for this, I have a TON of pillowcases (my mom thinks she needs to keep sending them to me... random), perfect way to use them! Question, could strips of ruffle knit fabric work instead of stretch lace? I have tons of ruffle fabric scraps. just wondering :) I like kelly k's t-shirt idea for cooler weather, too, I will have to try that one in the fall - maybe a good use for those too-short long-sleeve shirts from the year before!

  31. one more question, any other suggestions for places to get stretch lace? The website you listed doesn't have anything in white or cream, and their shipping is super expensive ($9 shipping for a few yards of lace, that's a lot for shipping!)

    1. I got mine from http://debslaceandtrims.com. Pricing seems reasonable and shipping was very quick!

  33. This is so sweet! It totally reminds me when I would beg to stay overnight with my gradma and she would cut up a pillow case for a night gown. Basically she just cut out the arms and the head and I slipped it on. Of course, yours is much cuter.
