(tutorial) Petal Dress (Finally!)

After many requests...
It is finally here.
The tutorial for the Petal Dress
we made for Project Run & Play last fall.

So this tutorial is a little bare bones...I pulled up the pics I took as I made it, and there aren't tons.  I also improvised as I went along, and I remember being in a HUGE hurry to finish for the deadline.  So there may be better ways to do things than I did.  So here goes!

Materials:
-Fabric...(I used most of a queen sized sheet)  Maybe 4-5 yds depending on size???
(Sorry I didn't keep track!)
-Contrasting ribbon for sash
-zipper

Bodice
Use tutorial (and size 5 pattern, if you wish) for Winter Rose Dress bodice here.  With the Petal dress, I put the sleeves in before I sewed the side seams, and didn't need to gather the top of the sleeves.  A little puff would be cute too, depending on what you want.

Skirt
1. Cut/Tear a rectangle of fabric: Width: double your child's waist
Length: as long as you want it plus about 3."

2. Cut out the petal shapes.  They are uploaded here (Scribd) or here (GoogleDocs).  This is for the size 5 dress.  I made them a little bigger than I used above, because when I was making it, I wished they were a bit bigger.  I think these could be used for size 3-6.  If larger/smaller, I would add/remove 1/2" all the way around per size

Sash
Next we sewed two ribbon stripes all the way down the sash.  We used 5/8" ribbon. I also tacked down the sash onto the bodice to hold one side in place.  You could do belt loops too.

Skirt Construction
Using a 1/4" seam allowance,

*You have cut out 20 of each size, and after you sew pairs together, you will have 10 completed petals of each size.
**Don't forget to press the petals after you turn them right side out.

*Make sure the skirt and bodice are right sides together!

**You could do your stitch lines and even stitch the petals on before you sew your skirt onto the bodice...it might be easier and more accurate.  I just didn't think of it at the time.

Because my petals were a bit smaller than I would have liked (the ones I uploaded are larger) I ended up having to do a lot of hand stitching the petals together.

Sorry this tutorial isn't one of my best... feel free to email me/leave a comment if you have any questions.  I will make sure to answer them in the comments.

Have Fun!
AND if you do make it, would love to see pics!

  10. Just to let everyone know...a queen size flat sheet is 90x102. If you buy 45" fabric you only need almost 3 yards!

  14. I love this dress it is super cute! I would like to make these for my daughters ages 5&7 for Easter. I know you said your pattern size was a 5, about how much would I need to add to it to make a size 7?

    1. Hi Rachel-
If I were you, I would find an existing size 7 pattern with a simple bodice, change the neckline (widen it and bring it up to boat neck) and then follow the tutorial. As for the petals, maybe enlarge them by 1/4"?

  17. Just finished making this dress for my daughter's Easter dress. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the tutorial and petal patterns!! It is BEAUTIFUL!

I made a size 6 and used the bodice pattern from McCalls M6197 - A. I made it with a boat neck, made the arm-holes a little bigger, and lengthened the bodice.

I also made the petals 1/4" bigger than the above size, I wanted to make sure they overlapped well. I made my sash 72" long, but I wish I had made it a little longer. Maybe 80". I also used almost 4 yards of material (100% cotton, so it shrunk).

Thank you again for the idea, tutorial, and patterns. This was a lot of work but SOOOO worth it!

    1. Hopefully I can take one tomorrow... No ball practice. How much and where did you tack the sash on for it not to fold? And mine will have to pull the dress some b/c the dress is a little big. So I should mark it when she has it on? Thanks!!

  22. Hi !

I'm a french woman and I love this dress. My daughter want it for a weeding this summer. I'm doing a try with a ordinary suiting before to buy something more beautiful.

I have a question about the petals.
I print them but it's very big. My daughter has 9 years old so the width of the rectangle measure 24.4 inches.
With your patterns, I only can creat approximatly 5 small petals. Is it right ? What is the size of your small petals please ?

Thank you so much for your help and for this tutorial !!

    1. Hi Eleonore,
I am assuming that your daughter's waist is 24.4"? If that is the case, the skirt piece should be 49" wide. You will be able to fit all ten petals across the rectangle. Remember, the petals will be smaller after you sew them together and pleat them, and they overlap. The small one measures about 5.5" across.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    2. Hi Jen,

No the waist of my daughter is 12,2" so the skirt piece is 24,4 wide ( she's very skinny).
Thank you for the measure of the small petals, I'll try today to do them. Maybe I'll just sew 8 petals.

      Thank you very much !

  26. May I make and sell some dresses based off your design? Initially I will probably only make them for my own daughter, but we're military overseas, and as limited as our options are for clothing our daughters modestly with style out here, I suspect that once she wears hers a few times I'll get asked to make some for other local little girls. This would be a very limited number of people, who all have trouble getting items shipped to them.

  27. I'm worried making this with cotton it will wrinkle and the petals will be a nightmare to iron. Have you had this problem? I'm thinking satin might be better?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I used a cotton sateen sheet...it hasn't been too bad. A cotton poly blend might work. The petals are pretty stiff as they are lined with a heavyish interfacing. Satin would be pretty too!

  28. Beautiful Dress! May I ask where you got the ribbon for the sash?

    Thanks,

    1. Hi Julie,
It is just two pieces of 5/8" black grosgrain ribbon stitched onto the fabric sash! I'm sure I got it at Joanne's.

  30. Jen, your petal dress is adorable. Do you think the pattern would work in velvet?

  31. So I'd like to do the little cap sleeves. How did you put the sleeves in first before the side seams? Could you explain a little further please?

    Thanks!

    1. Overlocking would work great at the top of the petals! You could fold them in, but it would shorten the petals a bit...

  35. I was looking around for just the perfect dress and came across this one for my daughters preschool graduation. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. I started working on it and will send you pictures when I'm done. You also opened my eyes to using sheets. I would have never thought about it. Thank you for saving my check book!!

  36. I fell in love with this dress the minute I saw it on Pinterest. I finally made it for my 8-year-old daughter for her baptism. I made a longer dress so it had four rows of petals instead of three. The skirt was also fuller than I realized and it took 14 petals per row to cover it (56 petals!). It's a size 10 and I lined the dress because the fabric I used was a little sheer. I ended up using almost 10 yards of fabric! Luckily I found a deal on this beautiful fabric for only $1/yard at Wal-Mart. It took A LOT of time, but I think it turned out beautifully! I pinned the pic on Pinterest and linked it back to your fabulous tutorial. Thank you so much!! http://pinterest.com/pin/11470174023674614/
