(iCandy) finally finished dresser & spring cleaning

I told you yesterday that I've been nesting, but last week, my nesting was interrupted by spring cleaning...which I guess my biological clock could have just been giving me a huge dose of both at the same time.  At any rate, another big item on my to-do list before baby #3 is born was to repaint this little dresser I'd had with baby #1...It's been sitting in the garage, an awesome red color with white knobs.
Not a huge project, but time consuming with sanding down the original 8 layers of red (red always needs multiple coats), repainting, sanding again to antique, staining, top coating and then re-drilling holes to fit the new handles...and then redrilling holes again because I messed up a drawer or two (oh my gosh!)  This became the project from you know where.
Whilst battling the week long "simple project" Pink Eye came to our house, which was causing me to constantly clean and disinfect any handle switch or knob that may have been touched.
So, while I hope this dresser dies, my house has been seriously disinfected for a week or so, and I've come to have an unconditional love with some of my cleaning products.  So, I'm wondering....
what are your 'can't live without' cleaners??
(I really do want to know, new cleaners makes me WANT to clean!)
ps...happy leap year!

(tutorial) Crib Sheets

I've finally started doing 'baby' things!
Finally!
We had a crib problem...we somehow misplaced all the hardware to our crib, and then moved.  I turned our house and garage upside-down, but to no avail.  (ps, I'm totally OCD about knowing where stuff is, so this was a horrible experience!)  Anyways, my hero neighbor came over, figured out the hardware that we needed and set it up for me last weekend!  (thanks, Michelle!)
So, now that we have a crib, I can get busy making things and nesting!
I already have a little girl, Ivy, and she's been in a big girl bed for forever (remember her quilt, here?)
Anyways, I want both of my girls to have matching beds, so I just used fabric from that same line, (It's a Hoot, designed by Momo for Moda) to make a crib skirt and a crib sheet.  I just used a bumper we had.
I love making crib sheets because I usually make my own crib bedding, and this way the sheets totally coordinate.  Plus, they're so easy to sew and less expensive than purchased sheets most of the time!
Today, I thought I'd share how I make my crib sheets.  I've tried a few different patterns and tutorials, and here is the concoction that I like best!

(eyeCandy) Trendy Ties

As I was pawing through my 5 year-old's closet a few months ago, I realized that ALL of his cute church ties were waaaay too short!  I had a few hanging on the rack that I had made, but most were holiday-ish, like just for Halloween, or Valentines day, and all of the other, really nice ties (like from Children's Place and Gap) were for 24 month to 4 year olds.  Oops...
So, for a few more weeks, Max's ties were hitting his belly button (way too short) until I could get my hands on some ties that fit!
Apparently, the owner of Trendy Ties, Rachel, grew up with my husband, and while I've never met her, I'm told by my Mother-in-Law that we would totally be friends.  So, in this small world, Trendy Ties has saved Max's Dressy wardrobe from the flood it was previously expecting!
And now let me tell you why I love these ties!

-First of all, the fabrics are all so fun!  I know it's called trendy ties, but really, every fabric and pattern that passes across the screen while you're in her shop makes you want it.  I love the colors and the designs, you can tell this girl's got style.
-Second, they are very well made.  I've made my own fair share of ties see {here} and {here} and sure, my patterns of faux-ties get the job done for your random holiday, or your tie to be worn every once in a while, but Trendy Ties are made using quality fabric, and you can tell when you first pull them from the package that they can take a little 'boy wear-and-tear'.
They clasp behind the neck, and the clasp doesn't slip at all; I was worried about the clasp coming undone while I wasn't looking, but no chance.  Once it's on, it's on! love it!

And...oh, man, Rachel did surprise me with a really fun little treat inside the tie she sent me!  Do you see the stinkin' cutest tie-tack ever made?  I had the biggest smile on my face when I pulled that little gem out of the package and Max was so excited to wear it to church yesterday!

So, Trendy Ties not only makes the cutest ties for little boys, they also make bow ties (there's a special place in my heart for bow ties)

and men's ties that all match.  Also, they boast several different sizes for each, so if you're looking for a tie for a newborn and a big kid as well as for a Daddy...this is the place. (and...there are extra long ties for men as well, which I have to look for when getting our daddy a tie.

Easter season is fast approaching (I know because my baby is due the week before Easter), so really, it's like a month away!  Now is the time to start searching for those darling ties in spring -colors that make for the most darling Spring-time pictures and Easter outfits!
Go check out Trendy Ties!
ps...Trendy Ties is offering iCandy readers a 20% discount this week only on all orders, just use code icandy at checkout!
{so this week is a really good week to get started on Easter outfits}
and come back and tell us which ties were your fav!

(iCandy) Easy Embellishment

So I know you are anxiously waiting to see what I did with

In my fabric stash, I had some cute floral prints, and was able to cut out that fun huge flower for applique!

I
Kept it simple on the skirt...just some matching ric rac so she could wear the skirt with anything.
This one was more subtle...

So I know this isn't reinventing the wheel,
but a few minutes of embellishing can really go a LONG way.

Blogs are life! Don't you think so? I think so...honest to blog I do...

As a designer and store owner blogs are the absolute life blood of my business. I rely on them for inspiration, comic relief,  and advertising even though mine is woefully neglected.  iCandy is one of my favs, it never fails to offer all of the above (with the ocasional heartwarming story thrown in as well). So, when Autie and Jen let me come on board as a sponsor for this rapidly growing little blog I jumped at the chance! I've done a giveaway (hopefully I'll do another soon) but this time I wanted to share a project. I decided I'd commit to a tutorial! In my mind it went like this..."Sure Steph, do a tutorial! You'll love it, you can really wow them and you have a whole month to work on it!" Hmmm....Easier said than done. Good luck thinking up a great project that hasn't already been done, and usually much better than I ever dreamed! I wracked my brain, and finally decided that I would offer a neat little project that focused on an item I've been wanting to try in the shop, along with my kickin' new boots. I'd love to hear any feedback on whether or not this is a marketable item! Here goes - thermal knit legwarmers!!

I wanted Leg warmers that were fairly thin and would sort of "slouch" right at the top of my boots. I used a lightweight thermal knit in Olive.

I also like the "Turned Down Pirate Boot" effect in this pic...

First I measured the widest part of my thigh (this was fairly traumatic) and cut my fabric 4 inches shorter than the widest part of my leg. For example, if my thigh is 14" wide (Hahahahah...oh, that's rich) then I cut my fabric 10" wide. You want to take measurements all the way down your leg and graduate the cut like you see below...

As you can see I cut the fabric on the slant - and I made sure that the stretch in the fabric was going to be around my leg, not in the length of the leg warmer. I measured from mid-thigh to my ankle.

Keep in mind, I wanted something feminine and slouchy, so I didn't want them to be skin tight. Plus, I had every intention of "ruffling" the edges just like I do my scarves -  like this black one.

Next I sewed up the edges. With my fabric it didn't matter (since both sides are alike) but with yours make sure you sew them with right sides together.
Once you have it sewn up, try it on for size and make any sewing adjustments as needed. When I first put mine on they were Waaaaayy to big, and I had to keep shaving off inches until I got it right. This will depend a lot on how much stretch is in your fabric. Mine had 50% stretch, so it was very forgiving.

Now comes the fun part! Ruffling! I LOVE working with knits (as you can see from my store Ooh Baby Designs ) one of the things I love most is how easy it is to ruffle the knit. For the ruffling set your zig-zag stitch anywhere from 2.0 - 5.0, any higher and your ruffle starts to look sloppy. Then as you finish the top and bottom edges of your leg warmers pull the fabric tight. As it runs through the machine it will start to "lettuce" on the edges.

Once you finish, put them on with tights, jeans, boots...whatever - and enjoy!!

...and here's the other fun tut:

I am not a summer person. However, occasionally in the dead of winter I get a small longing for the sun on bare shoulders and a warm breeze. With that in mind, lst year I designed this super simple top for my store..

Really cute right?? But the darn things wouldn't sell? So I changed the design a little bit, like this...

Again, not too shabby right? But you guessed it, the darn thing wouldn't sell. Don't get me wrong, they got tons of hits and everyone raved about how cute they were, but they just weren't selling. So, now I'm going to throw out a challenge. I challenge all of you to make one of these adorable little strapless, or strapped, boho tops and tell me what I need to do differently?

Oh yeah, did I mention that if you do it in knit it also doubles as a skirt?? Like this...

Uh-huh, now you're really excited aren't you? This takes me about half an hour, but I've made a few 100 of them so allow for an hour at least.

You will need:

1 yard of fabric (knit, cotton lawn, gauze cloth all work well) the width of your fabric (from selvage to selvage) should be a few inches wider than the widest part of you. For me that's my hips (*sigh*) but for some ladies it may be the bust area.
Matching thread
A package of elastic - anywhere from 1/2" - 1" wide is fine
Ball point needle if you are sewing with knits

I'm using a cotton lawn that I have recycled from an old swim cover up. Fold your fabric selvage to selvage and  measure the widest part of yourself - cut your fabric at least 4 inches wider. This will allow ease, so the finished top is not hugging your hips (or for you lucky girls, the ta-tas). In addition you want to measure from the top of your bust where the shirt will hit, to where you want your finished boho top to hit on your hips. Remember to add 3" to allow for hemming.

Now sew with right sides together. (sorry for the blurry pic, I was sewing with one hand, photographing with the other, watching "Say Yes to the Dress" with one eye, watching a 5 year old with the other eye, and arduously explaining why you can't play Nintendo DS for 3 hours a day...)

Next we are going to fold down the top of your boho top in a way that will leave a wide enough hem to thread your elastic through like so...

Mine is 3/4" but if you use 1/2 elastic, yours will need to be a little bit smaller.

Pin and sew your hem, but leave an opening large enough to thread the elastic into...

Ready, set, thread the elastic...

Once you have your elastic threaded, sew up the opening.

Next you'll want to hem the bottom of your top (mine was already hemmed since I recycled an old swim cover!)
At this point you can be done if you want...

I like a little extra support on mine so I added ribbon straps to my top.

Voila! Really cute right? Great with shorts, skinny jeans, sloppy jeans, capris, a little jacket, etc...Now why won't these things sell??

(iCandy) Summer's Comin' Maxi Skirt

I've had my eye on that stinkin' cute Maxi skirt on Elle Apparel ever since I found out I was pregnant.  I have been itching to make myself one, but didn't have the 'perfect' fabric, and to be honest was nervous about getting my measurements right!
Anyways, Jen and I made a quick trip up to LA one day while our kids were in school...we hit our 2-3 favorite spots, and jetted home, and while we were there, I found this SUPER fun striped knit.
It reminds me of summer, and I can hardly wait for weekdays at the beach, and, lets be honest, my tan!
Leanne's tutorial was great to follow...It worked out perfectly.  Here were my couple of hang-ups, just in case anyone else had the same hesitancy that I did!
Leanne tells you to measure your waist...ha ha.  since I'm further along in my pregnancy, I was nervous about where to measure, if I was going to measure myself correctly, where exactly I was to measure because my tummy is huge.  So, helpfully, she gives you her measurements, but she looks smaller than me (I've never seen her in real life...so I really have no idea how tall she is, etc) but she just looks teeny tiny...so, I was nervous to use her measurements!
Anyways, I finally just took her measurements and increased it by an inch on either side ( I don't know!)
Well, long story short, I've taken it in twice on each side now...and I could probably stand to do it again, because the fabric is (obviously, and gratefully) so dang stretchy!
So, this is what Jen (the genius) says...have someone else measure you (imagine that) and then subtract 3 inches to allow for stretch!
otherwise...Leanne's tut is rad, and I can't wait to make another one!
try it out, and tell her we sent you!

(iCandy) Spring Chick Skirt...Laced Up

So obviously Autie and I are on the same page this week.
When I got the idea for my Ruffled Heart Tee for Valentine's Day, I looked at Target, my go-to place, for a plain tee.  Of course they didn't have any.

SO, I had to go to dreaded Wal-Mart to see if they had any.  I really do not like going to Wal-Mart.  BUT occasionally I am glad I went- because this time, I not only found the tees, which were under $4.00 each, but I found the 2012 version of the tiered skirt that we used last year for the Spring Chick Skirt.  This year, there are only 2 tiers, but that's all good!

So...here is my new version of this idea...

I had some of this vintage lace I had picked up at a thrift store...and wa-la!
I love black and cream together.
Made a second ruffled heart tee in black...
{What more can a little girl want? Ruffles and Lace in the same outfit!}

Go on, go to Wal-Mart, brave the crazies, and
get yourself some of these skirts to glam up!
